1. General information
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and objectives:
Through critical understanding, this subject provides a general approach to certain periods, trends, genres, authors and relevant works of French literature. It also favours the necessary multidisciplinary approach.
As it is linked to the subject French Language, it is assumed that a basic instrumental command of French as a second language , level A1 of the CEFR, has been acquired. This means that the selected literary works can be read in of Spanish editions. However, students will be provided with carefully chosen excerpts in French which will allow them to have a more direct contact with the original text.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030: 4, 5, 10, 16 and 17.
2. Learning results
- Ability to situate and explain French literary expressions in relation to socio-historical contexts.
- Knowledge of the most relevant authors and texts of French literature.
- Ability to analytically read a literary text.
3. Syllabus
Topic 1. The medieval novel in verse and prose. Reading: Tristan and Iseo.
Topic 2. Prose genres in the 16th century. Rabelais. Reading: Gargantua [selection of fragments].
Topic 3. Theatre in the 17th century. Molière. Readings: Don Juan.
Topic 4. Literary creation in the Age of Enlightenment: the Volterian tale. Reading: Candido.
Topic 5. Novel renewal in the 19th century: Flaubert. Reading: Madame Bovary [selection of excerpts].
Topic 6. The novel at the beginning of the 20th century: Proust. Reading: By the way of Swann [part II: A love of Swann]
4. Academic activities
The learning process designed for this subject is based on the following:
- Lectures, in which students are introduced to the basic theoretical knowledge of the subject.
- Practical classes, which will consist of analysis, commentary and interpretation of selected literary fragments.
- Individual work: proposal and selection of topics, orientation and bibliographic information.
- Tutorials: follow-up of assignments related to the work and resolution of doubts.
5. Assessment system
The student must demonstrate achievement of the intended learning results through the following assessment activities:
First call
Global assessment test (to be taken on the date established in the academic calendar):
It will consist of a written theoretical-practical exam consisting of a theoretical part on the program and a practical part
on the required readings that accompany the program. This exam will account for 80% of the final grade.
Students must write two text commentaries (chosen with the teacher's approval), whose due date will be the date of the exam. The grade for such work will account for 20% of the final grade.
Assessment criteria:
The understanding and interrelation of concepts, the student's capacity for analysis, synthesis and reflection will be valued in the exam, as well as the order in the exposition of ideas and contents.
The use of methodological resources, the structure, the order in the exposition of ideas and contents, the level of reflection and analysis, the contrasted knowledge of the bibliography, and the care in formal academic and presentation aspects will be valued.
A grade of at least 4 in each of the parts is required for averaging.
Second call
It follows the same criteria as the first one.
